There's always a bit of hesitancy when going to the bathroom in an office because it's almost expected that it'll be dirty and unhygienic, but discomfort from having to go to the bathroom can lower employee productivity significantly. As easy it is to tell an employee to simply go when they need to, they might not want to when the office toilet is unsanitary.

The first step to maintaining a pleasant office bathroom environment is to make sure that the toilet is regularly cleaned and scrubbed. Here are some cleaning tips on how you can do it.

How to Clean an Office Toilet Bowl

Step 1: Protect Yourself

Naturally, no one wants to clean a toilet bowl, but you don't have to go in unprotected if you do find yourself faced with this unappealing task. You never know what tough stains you're going to face, so it's best to be ready for anything and put on some rubber gloves.

Not only will they protect your hands from any harsh cleaning products you'll be using, but rubber gloves will also stop the bacteria, dirt and grime from getting onto your skin. You may also choose to wear a cleaning apron and even a face mask if you choose to.

Step 2: Prepare the Toilet Bowl

Before you really get in there with a bit of elbow grease, you should remove any visible debris from in and around the toilet. Then, flush the toilet to rinse the bowl.

Step 3: Get Your Cleaner

In choosing your cleaning solution, you have a few options:

Commercial Cleaning Solution

This will be any toilet bowl cleaner that you can find and purchase from your local grocery store, and it'll be a cleanser that's specifically made to clean and remove bacteria and hard water buildup from toilet bowls. If you've chosen this as your cleaning solution, try to look for one with some form of bleach, or hydrogen peroxide or chlorine bleach, in it for more effective cleaning.

Distilled White Vinegar and Baking Soda

A very famous household cleaning combination, white vinegar and baking soda are a great and effective cleaning solution alternative. The acidity found in white vinegar is great for killing any unwanted bacteria, and the chemical reaction that occurs when combined with baking soda is sure to eradicate even the most stubborn toilet bowl stains.

Soapy Water

It might seem strange when dish soap and water, a combination most commonly used in the kitchen, can be used to clean your toilet bowl—but it can! You can make an effective solution by combining 1/4 cup of dish soap and water.

Coca Cola

You read that right! The beloved international soda brand is also a great toilet cleaner. The carbonation of the soda drink effectively loosens any toilet stains, significantly reducing the amount of scrubbing you have to do.

Step 4: Pour Your Chosen Cleaning Solution Into the Toilet

After choosing your preferred cleaning products, pour it liberally onto the rim of the toilet bowl. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to really loosen the stubborn stains. For cleaning solutions with a more liquid consistency, feel free to stir and swish the solution around the toilet bowl with your toilet brush throughout the few minutes.

Step 5: Scrub, Scrub, Scrub

After letting the solution sit for a while, whip out your toilet brush and begin scrubbing and brushing the toilet bowl to lift away the stubborn stains. When scrubbing, be sure to also work the brush under the toilet lip and down the toilet drain.

To avoid scratches, make sure that you don't scrub too aggressively. Should any stubborn stains persist, simply pour in more cleaning solution and let the mixture sit once again for a few minutes.

When all the stains have been scrubbed away, all you have to do is flush the toilet!

Step 6: Wipe Down the Toilet's Exterior

Once the toilet bowl has been thoroughly cleaned, it's time to make the outside of the toilet shine as well! To wipe down the toilet, you can use disinfecting wipes, a disinfectant spray and a cloth, some paper towels, or a sponge. Make sure to pay extra close attention to the parts of the toilet that are touched most often, such as the toilet seat and the flush.

Step 7: Properly Disinfect Your Toilet Brush

With your toilet squeaky clean inside and out, you should also remember to clean your toilet brush as well. You can do this by spraying it with a disinfecting spray and letting the solution do its magic for a few minutes. Afterwards, simply rinse it out with hot water.

With all the hustle and bustle that goes on in your office, maintaining its cleanliness is about the last thing going on in your mind. And when you're tired at the end of each day, you shouldn't have to worry about having to clean up after yourself.
