Nylon carpets make wonderful additions to any home. However, most homeowners don’t realize they need to clean their carpets often to keep its pristine condition. In this article, we’ll guide you on the different ways you can clean your carpet upkeep.

What is Nylon Carpet?

Nylon is a synthetic material known for its high tensile strength and durability that trumps all other common carpet materials. While inexpensive, nylon carpeting makes for a premium choice around the house, as it is stain-resistant and does not harbour mold or pests.

How to Clean a Nylon Carpet

1. Daily Care

Daily carpet cleaning helps maintain the soft, plush feel of your carpet, as you remove those debris that get into the nylon fibers. Cleaning nylon carpet flooring is not a difficult task, as the material is daily easy to maintain.

Commercial Cleaners for Daily Care

For daily cleaning needs, reach for a commercial cleaner that can sanitize and deodorize your carpets daily. Commercial cleaners work extremely well, especially in areas of your home where people tend to use the carpet often, like staircases, living rooms, and bedrooms.

For quick clean up, use a dry, powdered carpet cleaner like Aunt Fannie’s Carpet Refresher so you can easily vacuum it up. For daily disinfection, reach for a liquid spray like Purefypro Disinfectant Spray to completely cover the entire surface area. You may use paper towels to lightly spread the spray, although it is recommended to leave the spray as is.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming your nylon carpet should be a daily chore, as dirt latches onto the carpet easily in high traffic areas. Go over high traffic areas twice or thrice to fully remove all dirt and debris that are trapped within the fibers. Low traffic areas can be vacuumed over once for maintenance. When possible, move away furniture and fixtures to vacuum the carpet underneath.

The beater bar on your vacuum cleaner should also help fluff up the carpet fibers for a more plush feel. However, ensure your beater bar does not have a bristled brush attachment, as this may frizz your carpet instead. Otherwise, using the vacuum cleaner on your nylon carpet once a day is a great maintenance routine.

2. Steam Mop

The steam mop is a terrific way of getting rid of odours from your carpet while disinfecting the area with the heat from steam. If you don’t plan to walk around the carpet for a few hours, a steam mop would be your best bet in sanitizing your carpet, and removing any deep-seated stains that may occur in the fibers.

After vacuuming away the loose debris, grab your steam mop and use it to steam over the entire carpet area, making sure not to go over one section too many times to avoid saturating it with moisture.

3. Deep Clean

While setting a daily cleaning routine does wonders in the upkeep of your nylon carpet, deep cleaning can help get rid of those stains and particles that just won’t come out with the usual cleaning methods. Deep cleaning nylon carpet floors is essential in getting rid of stains and odours from your carpet.

Commercial Cleaners for Deep Clean

Spray-on heavy duty carpet cleaners, like Krud Kutters Heavy Traffic Carpet Cleaner, gets rid of common stains brought about by daily usage of the carpet. Stains like footprints, dirt, and liquid spills are no match for commercial carpet cleaners that take out stains from deep within carpet fibers.

Before you clean, move away furniture that may obstruct you from cleaning out the entire carpet area. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on proper usage of the carpet cleaner, and you may need to steer clear of your carpet after cleaning to allow the carpet to dry.

Baking Soda Deodorizer

Baking soda is an amazing cleaning agent that removes dirt and deodorizes at the same time. You may opt to add a few drops of essential oils, like lavender, lemon, or citrus, to your baking soda prior to sprinkling it onto the carpet, but this is optional. However, the oil will help in attracting dirt for easier cleaning.

Sprinkle the baking soda over your carpet, and brush it around to work the powder into the fibers. The friction from brushing the powder causes static electricity to attract dirt to the power particles. Use a dry vacuum cleaner to remove excess baking soda, as well as the dirt stuck to the powder. Repeat this process at least once a week for the best results.

Laundry Detergent for Carpet Cleaning

You may already have a cleaning agent perfect for removing stains on your carpet: laundry detergent! Laundry detergent was made to clean fibers, and work well when used diluted on carpeted flooring. For stain removal, focus scrubbing on the stained area until the spot is gone.

For general carpet cleaning, brush diluted laundry detergent into the carpet, and use a wet and dry vacuum to remove excess moisture. Go over the area with plain, warm water (not hot water)  to rinse out the laundry detergent, and remove moisture again with the wet function of your vacuum cleaner.

Dish Soap for Grease Stain Removal

Seen that viral video of spaghetti dropped onto carpets and thinking, ‘that stain is never coming out’? Don’t reach for shaving cream, foam hand soap, or any of those so-called ‘hacks.’ Instead, go for the best grease-fighting solution you have in your home - dish soap! Dish soap was made to break down oils and grease from food, so it can remove those food stains on your carpet.

For light stains, dilute dish soap in water and use paper towels to lightly blot onto the stain until the stain is gone. Wipe using a clean white cloth with some warm, not hot, water to “rinse.” For deeper stains, apply the dish soap pure, and use a soft-bristled brush, like an old toothbrush, to brush out the stain. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth or paper towels until the soap is gone.
